NORDTING - The Northern Assembly - is both an art project and a people’s movement of the North. They come from the other side of the Arctic, Northern Norway and Sápmi, with their Pan-Arctic initiative to strengthen the ties across the circumpolar north. From a people's assembly at NACC, they come to the castle with flags, music and the revolutionary red Arctic Beast on a quest to unite the People of the North. Get ready for both reality and utopia!


Marita Isobel Solberg

Marita Isobel Solberg is a visual artist, chanter and musician who works with numerous artistic directions that includes performance art, sculpture, ceramics, soundart and installationart. She holds holds a master's degree from Oslo National Academy of the Arts.

Marita grew up in Manndalen / Olmmáivággi / Olmavankka in the Northern-Troms region, and her closest ancestral roots are from the Northern-Norwegian, Sámi, Swedish and Finnish. She has since childhood explored different artistic and musical genres, and enjoys a career as musician and vocalist. Currently working from an artist studio at Kysten-Troms Fylkeskultursenter in Tromsø, Norway, she actively lives a nomadic life on the Norwegian and international music and art scene.

A common denominator for her projects is the profound intention to challenge the audience - and herself, by reaching into the innermost being of the spectator, creating deep vibrations through sound and the human connection, that which can transform our senses. Her artistic themes circle around a central core containing the intuitive presence, togetherness, spiritual technologies, connections and reflections around wholeness.

For someone who only just passed the threshold of their mid-20s, Ellen's amassed a resolutely solid body of work and, with a variety of projects, achieved more than some many years her senior. For Each Flower Growing, Froese's fourth full-length, produced in collaboration with the Sheepdogs' Sam Corbett, is her most accomplished statement to date, drawing on her established sound as a folk & country-based singer/songwriter while incorporating a wider frame of reference in the rich production, supple instrumentation, and overall sonic soundworld.

Kiera-Dawn Kolson

The Frost Jam

Kiera-Dawn Kolson is an award-winning multi-disciplinary artist, performer and young leader. Kiera first stepped on stage at the age of 3 1/2, and today, is a singer/songwriter, cultural facilitator and motivational speaker.

For over 20 years, Kiera-Dawn has been involved nationally and internationally in various realms of advocacy work directly involved in art and empowerment. She has been engaged in issues focused explicitly on Indigenous people's human rights, environmental protection, cultural preservation, Indigenous women's rights/MMIW, Indigenous communities and decolonization, harm reduction and empowerment through art and culture. Kiera-Dawn believes in the rehumanization of Indigenous nation's beyond the negative stereotypes around Indigenous potential and believes we all play an essential role in the redefinition of what that Indigenous potential looks like and how reconciliation will happen in this country.

A graduate of the En'Owkin Centre's NAPAT program; Kiera-Dawn is passionate about the revitalization of Indigenous heritage nationally and internationally and continues to learn and share her heritage with the next generations of First Nation's, Métis and Inuit, so they too can live and love their gifts of who they are.

Aurora Fiddle Society Fiddle Cats

The Aurora Fiddle Society youth fiddlers range in age from 5-15.  There are five levels of fiddlers, from players who just started playing this year to youth who have been playing the fiddle for several years.  The youth fiddling program has had many successes in the Yellowknife Music Festival, as well as community concerts and dances.  The fiddlers are directed by Andrea Bettger.

Ellorie McKnight writes melodies and lyrics inspired by vast landscapes, wild hearts, and endless dreaming. Her songs are shaped by delicate vocals, ambiguous lyrics, and an old timey-ness which invites wonder and nostalgia. Ellorie released her first solo EP in late 2021 –“for the heart’s sake”–a short and simple vocals-guitar collection of intimate and gentle songs. In spring 2023 she recorded a live show in-studio with full band and will be releasing a handful of those songs as a new EP in 2024.

The Wild Notes

The Royal Ball

The Wild Notes are a string band supergroup of sorts, a collaboration between four prominent Yukon old-time pickers. Their undeniable chemistry has developed over years of playing with one another in various capacities. The Wild Notes first joined as a formal band to play a Thursday fiddle night at Whitehorse’s famous 98 Hotel. Each member is a seasoned performer, and together, the band brings enough talent, grit, and experience to light up even the coldest of dance floors with a fiery flurry of old-time fiddle, classic honky-tonk, and even the occasional bluegrass banger. The vastness of their repertoire is only matched by their passion for this music.

Shéhérazade & Joséphine are two-story catchers and story gardeners who arrived in the North about fifty moons ago combined. Before meeting in Yellowknife, they lived in different parts of the world where they passionately garnered stories and tales passed over generations, fascinated by their magical powers and the keys they offer to make sense of the world and human relations. Inspired by the warmth and vibrancy of Yellowknife, they recently decided to team up, reclaim the oral tradition from their inspiring grandmothers, and share back all the fantastic stories they have harvested throughout their childhood and adult lives. They tell stories in amusing and accessible Franglais/Frenglish, to captivate the largest possible audience of yellowknifers and visitors, and to honour the universal component of oral lore.

Their tales are for kids of all ages, including the little one hiding in each of us.

This outdoor short film festival occurs in the snow castle's Great Hall. Sebastian was born in Fairbanks, Alaska in 2014, he started reading children's books at the age of 4. After moving to Yellowknife in 2019, he has developed a routine of going to the Yellowknife Public library to fulfill his wide range of reading interests.

If the Northern Lights Could Speak - Sarah Kalnay-Watson and Myranda Bolstad

Co-authored “If the Northern Lights Could Speak” with her best friend Myranda Bolstad. As pre-teens they would make up stories together on the shores of Great Slave Lake. Though they are now proper grown ups, complete with mortgages and grocery bills, they’ve never stopped dreaming up stories. “If the Northern Lights Could Speak” is their first published children’s story.

I Love you More than the North is Vast - Isis Essery

Isis Essery is a Northwords award-winning author and a Juno award-winning graphic designer. Not possessing the ability to stop creating, Isis started writing her first book, I Love You More Than the North Is Vast, with her sister Rhiannon when her son was just 6 weeks old. Over the last couple of years, I Love You More Than the North Is Vast has far exceeded their expectations, becoming a much-loved children's book sold across Canada.

Gabby the Magic Poodle - Jessie Wilson

Jessie Wilson is an Old Town resident and former water squatter.  She wrote Gabby the Magic Poodle as a dedication to the memory of her late dog and as an homage to the beauty of winter on Yellowknife Bay.

Munya Mataruse & Friends

Munya Mataruse, an artist originally from Zimbabwe, is currently based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. His professional music journey commenced in 2005 at Pakare Paye Arts Centre, an organization founded and overseen by the renowned Zimbabwean music superstar, Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi. Mataruse's musical style is a distinctive fusion of Afro Jazz, Katekwe, and Shangara, the local traditional Zimbabwean genre. His music is characterized by captivating Zimbabwean melodies and velvety vocals. Supported by Pakare Paye Arts Centre, Mataruse has delivered numerous performances at various venues, including schools, weddings, corporate functions, community galas, fundraising concerts, road shows, birthday parties, festivals, and tours (refer to the detailed resume below). Amidst his busy schedule of gigs, he successfully recorded four albums.


Saltwater Hank

The Royal Rave

With over 15 years behind the decks, Bush League DJ’s are a trio who love to share their passion for music with dance floors and listeners alike. With members from Yellowknife and Toronto, they helped ignite a slumbering Yellowknife electronic dance community. Playing anything from uplifting and emotional tracks to heavy party bangers, their sound provokes people to listen and feel the music. With styles ranging from House to Techno, Drum & Bass and beyond, they are never pigeonholed to a singular sound. With smooth mixes and quick cuts, you never know what you will hear next. Performing at festivals in BC such as Organic Nomadic, Metamorphosis and WHOMP, as well as local Yellowknife events including NWT Pride, Folk on the Rocks and the Royal Rave at the Snow Castle, Bush League Dj’s have been making dance floors move for years. Always providing an inclusive and positive atmosphere, Bush League strives to invite people to be themselves and have fun!

Karen Single Band

Karen and her band have been referred to as "living legends," "A must-see while in Yellowknife,” and "A part of the very fabric of Yellowknife," as declared by news media, journalists and even MLAs. They have been featured in tourist guides and highlighted in numerous local articles, setting new standards in the North with record-breaking performances and recognition. Performing 800-1200 sets per year has been their full-time career, before pandemic restrictions, for the last 26 years, 20 years in the NORTH. With a house gig and as a favourite hire for corporate, specialty and festival shows because of their draw potential. No band has performed more shows in the North. Also known as “Welders Daughter”, and "Canada's #1 working club band" or"House band of the North" they are in high demand.


Loren McGinnis

Comedy Night

Loren McGinnis was a CBC North radio voice and now-and-then standup comedian in Yellowknife for 16 years. He was run out of town a year ago after admitting he’d started seeing Calgary. The grass is always greener, they say. Now Loren is happy to be crawling back to beg for forgiveness and to tell of life south of 60.


Skye Plowman

Skye Plowman is a bartender by night and a comedian by... also night.  Most recently featured on the NACC stage as part of the Arctic Comedy Festival, Skye has been seen saying the quiet parts loud with performances on Northwestel TV, Folk On The Rocks, Boolesque and anywhere else she can get her hands on a hot microphone.  Skye is thrilled to be returning once again to the Snowcastle Great Hall to make you laugh until you can't feel your toes. Though maybe that's just the cold.


Mandee McDonald

Mandee is an Ininéw (Cree) comedian who has been performing stand-up in Sǫ̀mbak'é since April 2023. She spends most of her time in a pool of her own tears trying to finish her accursed PhD dissertation, occasionally emerging to tell an inappropriate joke about colonization.


Emily Blake

Comedy Night

Known for her dry and often self-deprecating sense of humour, you can often catch Emily Blake peddling her comedic wares at open mic nights in Yellowknife. Since attending her first King’s comedy night in March 2018, it has been Emily’s dream to perform standup at the Snowking’s Winter Festival.

Tanya Snow is a writer, throat singer and marketing specialist living in Yellowknife, NT with her son, Kaize. As a child, she spent 15 years in the foster care system. As an adult she is reclaiming culture through writing, throat singing and film making. 

Northern Princess - Amber Henry

Amber Henry has surprised herself, from time to time, with her bravery. She has had many adventures that have taken her to many wonderful places and met many beautiful people. She hopes that you will also find adventure and have stories to tell to all of the beautiful people you meet along the way. Amber’s books include: A Ptarmigan in a Birch Tree, Northern Princess and The Becoming (Pen Name: Lilith Thorn) and she hopes to have her first graphic novel “Here. We. Come.” In your hands in the near future.

Nick the Northern Special and Yukon Dogs - Lana de Bastiani

Lana de Bastiani is a northern author and publisher out of Yellowknife, NWT. She has released two of her own children's books: The Fox and My Boot, and Nick the Northern Special (with Megan Cooper). Lana is passionate about developing northern Canadian children's literature, and has been visiting the Snow Castle her entire life.


Bella Beats

The Bella Beats is a high performance dance troupe consisting of dancers aged 7 to 18 years. It was founded in 2011, and since then the team has represented the NWT in Alaska, California, BC, Alberta, and New York. They have danced on Broadway, travelled to DancerPalooza, the largest convention in North America, and have virtually attended conferences and competitions over the past three years. Our competitive dancers have been recognized in different competitions across BC and Alberta, and this summer we have 25 dancers travelling to Disneyland to dance down Main Street USA, working with professional Disney choreographers and cast members. While the Bella Beats are proud of these opportunities, they focus on building connection in their community and love to dance at the Avens Center, Folk on the Rocks, Canada Day celebrations, and are thrilled to be dancing at the SnowKing Festival for their

Jonathan Antoine is Dehcho, a Dene musician originating from the small community of Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ (Fort Simpson.) Jonathan plays folk, rock, and country music on the shores of the Dehcho and is rooted in his Dene up bringing, making for some great music.


Wine Lips

The Oddball

Toronto-based garage punk psych rockers Wine Lips hit the stage for the first time in the fall of 2015. Initially a part-time project between songwriter/guitar player Cam Hilborn and drummer Aurora Evans, the band began playing clubs in Toronto, stretching organically to surrounding Ontario cities and then Quebec.

Wine Lips released their self-titled debut LP on indie label Fried Records in 2017 and set out on their first 5-province tour east to Halifax, and haven’t looked back since. After an appearance in Quebec City, the band was approached about touring overseas. That chance meeting resulted in an April 2018 tour of Hong Kong and China, where enthusiastic audiences received them. The band spent most of their free time in 2020 writing and recording their third full length record “Mushroom Death Sex Bummer Party” at The Sugar Shack.


Big Independent

The Oddball

Big Independent, the only band in Yellowknife, formed when four middle-aged men discussed openly, for the first time, that Baby Brian’s Country Club gave them diarrhea. They wanted to play in a band, but they were too old to join Quantum Haze, and not old enough to join Prime Time; too sexy to play in Brendan McIntosh and Friends, but not sexy enough to play in Flora and the Fireweeds; too talented to jam with Wade Carpenter, not talented enough to jam with Indio Saravanja. So they started their own band and named it after a grocery store that none of them shop at (unless they need the good stuff). Here's Big Independent.

Taking cues from new and old acoustic folk, indie, and Americana - Hughes incorporates ambient vibes into his songs while remaining true to his acoustic singer/songwriter structures and heartfelt themes. Hughes' debut EP was released in April 2023, followed by the single, Idaho, in September.

Kenney’s willingness to unflinchingly pursue their artistic impulses on their terms has resulted in numerous accolades over the past decade, including a SOCAN Songwriting Prize, a nomination for Juno Adult Alternative Album of the Year, and too many East Coast Music Awards and Nova Scotia Awards to count.

2021’s “Covers” was an acoustic collection that offered a glimpse into the molecular musical composition of the artist interpreting them. The 2022 release, “With You,” was written, played, and produced by Kenney alone. 2023 will see the release of a new album of original material.

The Only is the only band in the Sahtu Region, based out of Norman Wells. The band is a three-piece rock band that consists of a guitar/vocalist, bassist, and drummer/vocalist. The band has been together for over five years and performs a mix of original and classic rock cover songs. Our original music is crafted through inspiration from living in Norman Wells and the North. We are going on our first tour ever with our final show of the tour at the Snowking Winter Festival!

Willie Thrasher is a legendary Canadian Inuvialuit musician from Aklavik, Northwest Territories. He has recorded both as a solo artist, and as a member of several bands, including The Cordells, and Red Cedar, with Morley Loon. For the last 18 years, Thrasher and (Linda) Saddleback have been performing as a duet, traveling the world from London England to Austin Texas and throughout Canada. In October 2023, Mr. Thrasher was honoured with the Western Canadian Music Alliance (WCMA) Heritage Award, presented to him at Breakout West in Kelowna, BC. Thrasher states, “I am excited to be coming to Yellowknife to experience once again that feeling of touching the North and connecting with its people.”

Reuben and the Dark is the enrapturing alt folk-rock outfit led by singer-songwriter Reuben Bullock, whose music blends introspective lyrics with soaring instrumentals. Reuben and the Dark's music has been featured in Breaking Bad, The Highwaymen, Game of Thrones, The Handmaid’s Tale, and many more. The talented Calgary-born Joshua Tree-based singer-songwriter, skateboarder and carpenter has released four full-lengths on Arts & Crafts and toured the world.
